San Jacinto College's North Gallery will welcome art lovers and community members to the opening reception for "Borrowed Eyes," a new exhibition by Houston native and San Jacinto College alumna Gladys Cendejas, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22.
Through her paintings, Cendejas invites viewers to see the world through borrowed eyes. The exhibition sets her own perspective of reality beside the hidden symbolism that grows out of intuition and curiosity, exploring how the past and the future exist together.
Cendejas earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Houston after beginning her path at San Jacinto College. Her work is deeply grounded in her Mexican roots and inspired by the many indigenous arts and traditions of Mexico. Those influences shape a body of work that finds art in everyday life, with a particular focus on patterns and the mundane, details many people overlook or have lost the habit of appreciating.
By turning attention to the ordinary, Cendejas encourages viewers to slow down and look again at the things that surround them each day. What may seem routine at first glance becomes, in her paintings, a source of meaning, memory and imagination.
The exhibition is also a homecoming of sorts. Cendejas' return to North Gallery highlights the creative paths San Jacinto College students can take, from foundational art courses on campus to university degrees and professional work as practicing artists.
Refreshments will be served at the reception, so guests are encouraged to bring family and friends. Everyone is welcome.
